This is it! This is the start of my work. I met again my cooperating teacher - Ibu Rosminta and I noticed that day that she doesn’t know how to speak in English, it will be difficult for the two of us to communicate. So, in case we want to talk with each other, we have an interpreter and one of that is Ibu Maderisita, an english teacher and she served as my human google translator.

With Ibu Maderisita, we walked around the school and she showed to me all the facilities, the faculties, the achievements, and the environment of the school.

I finally got the chance to know the school information through her and through my observation and now, I'm finally taking the time to sit down and immortalize the experiences I had in that school through this platform.

Academic Support System:

Various facilities are owned by SMPN 1 Pontianak to support teaching and learning activities. These facilities include:

  • Classroom

  • Library

  • Biological Laboratory

  • Physics Laboratory

  • Computer lab

The school is not just excelling academically but also non academically. There are extracurricular activities/organizations or clubs in the school that supports the skills of the students. There are also workshops, mentoring and outside-of-school programs such as Volleyball, where they were always the number one in every contest, Scout (Pramuka), Paskibra, Marching band, Traditional music, Taekwondo and so on. There are times that they won so many contests and brought a lot of trophies and medals in the school. One example is the bronze medal in student-teacher workshop in Beijing and the water rocket in Manila, Philippines.

I'm so proud of my school! A lot of trophies!!

Teaching System:

Teaching responsibilities are varied depending on the teacher. They set the examinations and provides lectures and the other one is their responsibility outside the classroom. Every teacher has minimum times to teach which is 24 hours per week ( 1 hour = 40 minutes); Monday to Friday and they have midterm test and semester test.

The students will spend 3 years to finish Junior high school and at the end of the last year, they will face national examination from government. The result of their NAT exam will determine which senior high school (SMA) they can enter. If their score is good, then they can enter favorite government school. If their score is not good, and cannot accept in any government school, then they will go to private school, which is quite expensive.

When it comes to the teaching, they also use several methods like Scientific method (observing, questioning, collecting information, associating, and communicating), Discovery / inquiry, Project based, Genre based text, and others.

Materials and other learning sources:

Materials and learning sources are evident in the school. There are a lot of facilities like laboratories, library, and media room. Also, the school has internet connections! The school also provides projectors and speakers for presentation. Regarding the textbooks/ books used by the school, one thing you will observe is that the sources are written in Bahasa Indonesia.

Mathematics textbook written in Bahasa

Measurement and evaluation system:

The assessment is mostly done in multiple choice, essay and fill in the blank. In Mathematics, there are also problem-solving part. Evaluation system is more about cognitive. There are also performance tasks like cooking, etc. There are also notebooks provided by education department that support the students throughout the government. There, they will put their answer in all of the exercises and the teacher will record their scores.

Curriculum:

The curriculum is a set of plans and arrangements regarding goals, content and the lesson materials and the methods used as the guidelines for the conduct learning activities to achieve specific education.

Usually they change the curriculum every 10 years, but right now the government change the curriculum based on the needs and the development of educational needs .

The curriculum in Indonesia named as Kurikulum 2013 Revision that had been designed by Research, Technology and Higher Education in 2013. The Curriculum setting will be students - centered where they will work on as individual or as group in every discussions they had, while the teacher will act as the facilitator that support the knowledge and guide the students to gain the knowledge.

The objective of the curriculum is based on competencies essential as an instrument to direct learners into:

(1) quality human beings capable and pro-active response to the ever-changing challenges of the age;

(2) educated human beings who believe and cautious to God Almighty, be noble, healthy, knowledgeable, capable, creative, independent and

(3) citizens who democratic and responsible national education development which is mandated in Law Number 2003 regarding the system National Education.

The curriculum is written in bahasa however, it is well-planned, organized and done with a group of people. Same as the Philippines, society plays a big role in developing the curriculum. The relationship between the curriculum and the society is natural and encompassing. The curricula should refuel and preserve the culture of society and its aspirations and it is visible in their curriculum.

The Development of SMP Negeri 1 Curriculum Pontianak City refers to the National Education Standards to ensure the achievement of national education goals.National Education Standards consist of eight standards, namely content standards, processes, competence of graduates, education personnel, facilities and infrastructure, management, financing and educational assessment. Two of the eight National Education Standards, namely the Content Standards (SI) and the Graduate Competency Standards (SKL) are the main references for SMP Negeri 1 Pontianak City in developing curriculum.

The 2013 curriculum aims to prepare Indonesian people to have the ability to live as individuals and believing citizens, productive, creative, innovative, affective and be able to contribute to life society, nation, state, and world civilization.

Teaching plan (of your major)

Teaching plan are also written in bahasa. Comparing it in the Philippines, we write it in English. For me and even the teachers there, their teaching plan is more complicated. The reason is that, it is very lengthy and very detailed. One example of that is the teaching plan for Mathematics given to me by my cooperating teacher. The teaching plan is written in bahasa and it is very lengthy that it can be more than 5 pages.

In the Philippines, we actually have teaching plan but it is more simple and we call it also the daily lesson log where is very short. Similar to us, we also consider the curriculum before doing the teaching plan.

Gosh! This is very long!

Actually, 1 teaching plan is usually for 1 chapter and they have several meetings for 1 chapter. So, they need to describe what they will teach in every meeting. For example, In chapter 1, they need 5 meetings, so they will write different kinds of activities for each meeting.

Making those long and complicated lesson plan is soooo tiring and boring and not interesting..But as a teacher it a must, because every semester the government supervisor will come to check it. If we do not do it, then they will give us a low score. 📷

Based on the profile of the school, we can say that the academic support system, the teaching system, the sources, the materials, the evaluation system, and the curriculum became progressive since it became the National Standard School for it was the first junior High School in Pontianak. At the same time, the school is still progressing and still needs a lot of improvements like teacher needs, facilities, and so on

Their school and the curriculum is somewhat the same as the schools in the Philippines. We followed learner-centered approach. We just differ in their culture, religions, and language.
